Graphics card overheats and computer shuts down?

Question: Graphics card overheats and computer shuts down?

(Posted by: Alan Williams on 2010-03-19 20:53:46)

My friend got a new pc and gave me his old one. he told me it kept shutting down on him and he didn't know why. i checked it out and it turns out the graphics card: (NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO) keeps overheating, and holy fishsticks does that sucker get hot!!! It gets so hot that it causes the system to go go to a blue screen with white text, then reboot itself...I tweaked the settings for the fan attached to the card to run at 100 % continuously, then I opened the case and put a big old fan next to it and that helped alot, but that sucker still gets hot as heck after a while and causes the pc to reset. btw, the video card is OVERCLOCKED!!! maybe this is the cause... how do i un- overclock the graphics card??? any other suggestions? specs: - NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO - amd athlon 64 X2 duel core processor 5200+ - Two 1 gig ram cards - windows xp service pack 3

Http:/ / nvidia.com/ object/ winxp_196.21_whql.html Look for the "NVIDIA System Tools Software " link on the bottom. Install it. May already be installed. Look in the Start Menu, All Programs for "NViDIA Corporation " and " NVDIA System Monitor ". Set everything back to "Default Settings ".

You could go into te BIOS and lower the amount of resources attributed to the g-force card
